The Moth Podcast – Stories Told

The Moth is a not-for-profit storytelling organization, founded in New York in 1997 by poet and novelist George Dawes Green.
Essentially The Moth is about story telling nights, held in New York venues, where storytellers from all walks of life take to the stage with an open mic, their stories told from memory – no notes allowed. The performances are funny, engaging, and thought provoking, which will go a long way to explaining the huge success of these shows around New York, where it has grown from a group of friends, getting together to tell stories in a new york apartment, to now have eight ongoing programs, and having brought over 3,000 stories to an audience of over 100,000.
The Moth now has a weekly podcast where each week they make available a featured story from a past Moth storytelling night, with each story being unique in its own right, from tales with historical significance such as Bob Zellners account of a car trip he took with Marlon Brando during the height of the civil rights movement (Zellner was arrested 25 times in five states during this period) , to Jack Hitt’s tale of his crazy super who insisted that he was an undercover spy. I find myself constantly engaged by these podcasts, for the unique viewpoint they give you on life.
If you happen to check out the Moth podcast and like what you hear, you’ll be pleased to know that it will be getting its own radio show (The Moth Radio Hour) consisting of five pilot episodes this fall. Lets hope it’s a success and that there will be many more.
